Walking through the entry point to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp felt like a massive smack in the face.
Walking the property one can only imagine the atrocities against humanity that occurred there.
.
The barracks showed what the living conditions were like. . A prison, located inside the concentration camp was used as punishment for such common “crimes” as staying in bed 10 minutes past wake-up.
.
The posts outside where prisoners had their hands tied together, then hung by their wrists, dislocating their shoulders and eventually dying. . Seeing where the crematorium once stood.
.
Going through the infirmary where they did more harm than good with medical experimentation.
.
This was a small camp. Tens of thousands of people died here. Approximately 1.1 MILLION people died at Auschwitz.
.
By the time I was done with the tour it was pouring rain. The wind was blowing. All I had was my hoodie. No gloves. No jacket. No beanie. It was so cold.
.
And that’s when it hit me. I turned into the wind and just stood there.
.
I eventually got on the bus. Drenched. And all I could think was, “Why didn’t they fight back?!” . Why didn’t they fight back?!?!
.
Why is “this” part of recent history?! . 50-60 MILLION people died during World War II - that was only 78 years ago. There are people ALIVE today who witnessed this.
.
Never stop fighting to remain free.
